VALLEY GARDENS – 3 : 1 – MARDEN

The Year 8 boys lost their unbeaten record and were knocked out of the cup at the first attempt on Wednesday night after a tough game away to last year’s cup runners-up Valley Gardens.

Due to waterlogged grass, the game was played on a senior sized 3G pitch and Marden never really adapted to the conditions, losing the midfield battle and going 2-0 down by half time.  There was a spirited second half fightback, with Theo Riley hitting the post before pulling one back from an indirect free-kick, then lively substitute Josh Urwin could have equalised when his shot from point blank range was cleared off the line.

Valley were the stronger team throughout and despite the second half fightback the home side broke to score a third past Aidan McDonald, who made three or four fine saves to keep Marden in it.  Although that puts them out of the U13 Cup, the Year 8s are still in a strong position in the league after three wins out of three and will look to get revenge on Valley Gardens when they meet for their league encounter.

Well done to all fourteen lads who took part for their effort and commitment.
