School of Sanctuary 2029!

Marden High has been a School of Sanctuary since 2023 and last Thursday we were visited by North Tyneside’s Schools of Sanctuary Team. They came to meet the students involved and talk to them about all the work they do around school.

They applauded the efforts made by students to create a culture of welcome at Marden High. They were very impressed by all their hard work; delivering assemblies; creating personal development lessons; fundraising and raising awareness on issues of forced migration and asylum. They were delighted to re-accredit Marden High as a School of Sanctuary for another three years!

School of Sanctuary Award

We are now officially a School of Sanctuary! Our ‘supporting organisation’ temporary award has been upgraded after a successful review, and we recently attended an award ceremony to commemorate the event, which was covered on BBC Look North.

Well done to Miss Fenwick and her team for all their hard work this year!

Cross-school collaboration for Refugee Week

Last week, our School of Sanctuary group joined forces with Norham High, another School of Sanctuary organisation. This means that both schools have committed to a pledge to create a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum.

In an event organised by Norham, and hosted by Marden, the two schools took part in a series of games and activities to promote teamwork, togetherness and recognising differences, all to celebrate the theme of Hope during Refugee Week.

On Sunday 23rd April, some of our Schools of Sanctuary Student Committee attended a march in solidarity with Refugees from Tynemouth to the Spanish City in Whitley Bay.

Schools of Sanctuary: Our Pledge

Here at Marden High, Miss Fenwick and a dedicated group of students have been working with the Schools of Sanctuary, a national network of over 380 primary and secondary schools, nurseries and sixth forms all committed to creating a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum.

As a result of our work fostering a culture of welcome and safety for people seeking sanctuary, we are looking to be eligible for an official Schools of Sanctuary award, and this is our pledge:

We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).

We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed, included and supported within our context. We expect our branches or local groups (if any) to support their local City of Sanctuary group if one exists, and will facilitate contact between them and their local City of Sanctuary group.
