Independent Study Task
This task should take a whole week (5 nights). The final work should be handed in to your form tutor on Monday 26th March, presented as a complete project.
Task One Go to the school website, look for Super Learning Day, and view the film on the Early Attempts at Flight
Use the internet, books or films to research the helicopter designs of Leonardo Da Vinci
Write up what you have found out about early flight, and present your findings as either a newspaper page, or a leaflet, or a story that is illustrated with images.
Task Two Use the link on the website to see how to make a Roto Copter out of paper.
Form a hypothesis about how long you think it should take to fall; and will it be the same every attempt?
Take your Roto Copter to your bedroom window and drop it to the ground, record the time, in
Seconds, that it takes to touch the ground. You need to repeat this experiment 10 times.
Task Three Create a bar chart of your findings. Look back at your hypothesis! What actually happened?
Why do you think this is so? Present your graph and theories neatly as part of your project.
Task Four Use the link on the website to read the instructions for the Great Global Adventure Competition.
Design your poster either by hand or on computer. This has to be included into your project too.
Task Five You must use all of the information that you have gathered both in the Independent Study and during the Super Learning
Day you have produced to present a project folder of your work. Be as creative as you wish, use images, charts, and text.
Extension Task As part of Science and Engineering Week you may enter the competition by following the link on the website.
Create a 30 sec video on Motion and submit it on the Science and Engineering website.
