On the last Wednesday of term the East block of Marden High School was turned into a spectacular light show as we revealed the fantastic work the Year 8 students produced on Super Learning Day last Friday.
Alongside the awesome light show that the Year 8 Science and Art students produced for Super Learning Day, the Media group also produced some excellent experimental Video and Photography work, using the same theme of light and primary colours.
Their brief was to be imaginative and creative with cameras on the school site, and produce a piece of art expressing visual motifs of red, green, blue or all three. Click on the tab below to see some of their work…
Last year we collapsed the timetable so that the Year 7s could discover what made the coast special. The Year 8s also enjoyed their own Super Learning Day…
…they learnt about the notion of motion, including a visit from some feathered friends…
What is in store for this year’s Year 8 students, who take part in their own Super Learning Day on Friday 14th December…?
Here is a look at what last year’s Year 7s did on their Super Learning Day – the theme was “What makes the Coast special?” The day was a mix of Creative Arts, Science and Media, and here is some of the photography and video work that was produced on the day.
Super Learning Days at Marden take a lot of planning, and last year’s took the form of a whispering campaign, building towards the day with small snippets of information, such as this teaser video, to give the students a flavour of the kind of creative work they might produce on the day.
Independent Study Task
This task should take a whole week (5 nights). The final work should be handed in to your form tutor on Monday 26th March, presented as a complete project.
Task One Go to the school website, look for Super Learning Day, and view the film on the Early Attempts at Flight
Use the internet, books or films to research the helicopter designs of Leonardo Da Vinci
Write up what you have found out about early flight, and present your findings as either a newspaper page, or a leaflet, or a story that is illustrated with images.
Task Two Use the link on the website to see how to make a Roto Copter out of paper.
Form a hypothesis about how long you think it should take to fall; and will it be the same every attempt?
Take your Roto Copter to your bedroom window and drop it to the ground, record the time, in
Seconds, that it takes to touch the ground. You need to repeat this experiment 10 times.
Task Three Create a bar chart of your findings. Look back at your hypothesis! What actually happened?
Why do you think this is so? Present your graph and theories neatly as part of your project.
Task Four Use the link on the website to read the instructions for the Great Global Adventure Competition.
Design your poster either by hand or on computer. This has to be included into your project too.
Task Five You must use all of the information that you have gathered both in the Independent Study and during the Super Learning
Day you have produced to present a project folder of your work. Be as creative as you wish, use images, charts, and text.
Extension Task As part of Science and Engineering Week you may enter the competition by following the link on the website.
Create a 30 sec video on Motion and submit it on the Science and Engineering website.
