The English department with Year 7 during the World Book Day awards assembly.
The 20th anniversary of World Book Day took place on Thursday, and Marden were active participants as usual. Staff, Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to dress as a literary character for the day. There was also a lunchtime quiz and Key Stage 3 students took part in literary activities and writing competitions with the English department all day.
In total, £200.30 was raised for BOOK AID. Well done to everyone who took part.

A group of Year10 students last week participated in the region’s largest medical career day event organised by MCS Raising Aspirations Group.
Caitlin Thompson and Nieve Allot were prize winners in the Diagnostic workshop and Sajan Mann and Kijah-Star Wardsmith in the CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) workshop.
Well done to all involved.
We have more success to celebrate at Marden, as Year 8 student and Creative Writing Club regular Jenny Hurnell entered the Sunderland Literature & Creative Writing Festival and came 2nd in the Short Story Award in the Under 17s category.
“I went to the awards ceremony…and was amazed that I came 2nd. There were 170 people that entered in the under category!” said Jenny.

Marden’s Creative Writing Club have busy once again, this time submitting an anthology of ghost stories for a competition, all 250 words or less. You can read the ebook here via this link.
After the success of last year’s Young Persons Question Time at the Quadrant at North Tyneside Council, Marden High will be taking part once again in this year’s event on the 11th October.
The event is chaired by BBC’s Adrian Pitches and will feature local mayor Norma Redfearn
There will be live tweeting during the event so look out for Marden High’s participation, and see how the panel handle some of our questions.

Eight girls from our Creative Writing Club have once again been published in print, after their poems were selected to appear in ‘The Poetry Trials’, a competition that stretched to students across the globe!
Their task was to craft a poem about something they cared about or from their point of view using creativity, technique and skill, and they have now been forever immortalised in print in this fantastic anthology.

Six aspiring writers, now in Year 8 and 9, entered the Young Writers Spine Chillers Competition in Spring 2016 as part of Creative Writing Club. Their task was to write a chilling ‘mini-saga’ in 100 words or less.
Joelle Esquejo, Jenny Brooks, Jess Beales, Jess Wallace, Jenny Hurnell and Kate Edwardson are all competition finalists and their stories have been published in the Young Writers Spine Chillers – County Durham & Tyne and Wear Anthology. Well done girls!
