Year 8 Football: Marden 6-3 Wellfield

By J Ranson3rd March 2016

The Year 8 footballers took another strive towards the play-offs with their third win on the bounce, this one an impressive 6-3 dismantling of Wellfield in cold and windy conditions at Marden High on Wednesday evening.

Josh Harrison knocked home the first goal after Cameron Balloch’s looping long range shot came back off the crossbar. Harrison then made it 2-0 with a fine solo goal, picking up Connor Brown’s pass on the halfway line before darting down the left wing and slotting home from a tight angle.

Owen Kennedy fired a long range shot into the net to make it 3-0 before half time, and Marden kept up the pressure in the second half, despite shooting uphill and into the wind.

Connor Brown slotted home a fourth before Owen Kennedy fired home an excellent first time shot into the top corner for 5-0. Josh Harrison completed his hat-trick from close range before Marden dropped off and allowed the away side in to score three late goals, one a well taken free kick.

Marden vs Wellfield 2-3-16

It was a superb performance all round, particularly defensively, with Marden first to every ball and defending resolutely – Owen Foster a safe pair of hands in goal, and Harvey Gates and Reece Maddison breaking up attacks at the back.

Another win in their final game of the season might just be enough to take them through to the play-off semi finals. Well done lads!

TEAM: Owen Foster; Harvey Gates, Adam Dunn, Jared Robson (c), Cameron Balloch; Reece Maddison, Harry Perkins (sub: Jonny Jordan), Peter Whitehouse, Connor Brown; Owen Kennedy, Josh Harrison.

GOALS: Josh Harrison (3), Owen Kennedy (2), Connor Brown

MAN OF THE MATCH: Reece Maddison

Marden Bridge 0 – 3 MARDEN HIGH

By J Ranson10th February 2016

Year 8 boys triumphed 3-0 against rivals Marden Bridge on Monday night. After a slow start a counter attack saw Connor Brown play in Josh Harrison, who raced through to open the scoring.

After some neat footwork on the left of the penalty area by Owen Kennedy, his cut back was smashed home on the half volley by Yr7 student Peter Whitehouse to make it 2-0 at half time.

A third was added in the second half by Josh Harrison after some good work by Harry Perkins, and Josh was denied his hat-trick by the crossbar late on before having another goal ruled out for a push.

YR11 Football: Seaton Burn 4 – 3 Marden High

By J Ranson2nd October 2015

The Year 11s kicked off their final season representing Marden with a well fought game away to Seaton Burn on Monday night, and were narrowly defeated with a cruel deflected winner in the last minute.

Luke lines up a free kick as Marden press for an unlikely comeback victory in the second half.

Marden were slow to get started and conceded within minutes of the kick off after a smart long range effort from Seaton Burn. The home side raced into a 3-0 lead within 20 minutes after beating the offside trap twice more, and with both sides hitting the crossbar an eventful game looked to be already all wrapped up.

Marden got to grips with the pace of the game however, and got back into it with a Luke Monaghan penalty after striker Harvey Laycock was brought down. They kept pressing and managed a second before half time when man of the match Jack Ashworth burst forward from left back to send a swinging left footed shot over the goalkeeper’s head and into the roof of the net.

Playing neat football, and now making the most of their numerous chances, Marden’s confidence grew in the second half as winger Will Kelly made it 3-3, striking home from close range as a loose ball ricocheted to him in the box.

Monaghan had a chance to complete an unlikely comeback when he struck the bar from 40 yards with a free kick, Kelly failing to convert the rebound, and Seaton Burn suddenly found a second wind, hitting the bar themselves once more and blazing another close range shot over after Marden failed to clear a corner. Then, as extra time loomed in this league/cup double header, Seaton Burn claimed all 3 points and advance to the next round as a hopeful shot from outside the box flicked a Marden defender and wrongfooted Aidan McDonald in goal.

It was nevertheless a very positive performance from Marden’s U16s, with Luke Monaghan and Tom Stoetzel orchestrating things in midfield, and Lee Scott turning in an impressive performance at centre-back in his first ever game representing the school.

Well done lads.
