Going Mindfully into 2013

Happy new year, first of all.

If the end of 2012 is anything to go by, Marden has every reason to look forward to 2013 with genuine optimism. Our last week of term was one of the best I’ve experienced. There was an array of exciting events such as our year 8 super learning day (Marden Lumiere), a year 7 literary heritage tea party and a wonderful concert, featuring the first live performance by our new orchestra. All of this was rounded off in the happy, festive form of our carol service in a packed out St. George’s Church.

Pyjama Party for Children in Need: Friday November 30 2012

Friday is our non-uniform day for Children in Need. Students are invited to wear suitable pyjamas or a onesie and bring their teddy bears! If parents and carers would like their sons or daughters to participate, a £1 donation is required. Wristbands on sale from tomorrow.

NUFC’s Robbie Elliott will also be in school on Friday to draw our fund raising raffle: tickets on sale for £1 Tues/Wed/Thurs.
Prizes include shopping vouchers and family days out- all proceeds will go to Bike for Bobby.

Marking, Marking, Marking

When it’s going well, teaching is the best job in the world.

There’s something very special about what happens between a teacher and a class when the relationship is right and they are united by the excitement of learning. And I must admit that I miss that special chemistry when I look back on my many years as an English teacher.

But (and I feel guilty about this) I don’t miss the marking.

Head’s Blog: The Quiet Revolution

I did some serious thinking on Friday afternoon.

I was having a great time , as I always do on our training days. After an excellent lunch in our new cafe, all of the staff were on a carousel of ICT training in the use of Google Docs. There I was in front of a computer, enjoying a workshop expertly led by Stephen Dodds and Matt Swain.

And suddenly I realised that a massive change has occurred at Marden, almost without us noticing.

Head’s Blog: Hats Off to City

Anyone who has been within ten paces of me this week will know that  my big event of the term so far has been a visit to another school.

Now that doesn’t mean that I’m playing down the great things we’ve been doing at Marden recently and  I must pay tribute to the way in which staff and students have teamed together to make our new systems work. But if it’s OK with you, I’ll save all of that for other blogs.

Open Day: Friday October 19th 2012

The number of requests for tours of Marden High shows that we need to organise an open day for prospective parents who are thinking about choosing us for September 2013.

Open is an interesting word and one that applies to Marden at a number of levels. This is because we’re an open school in more ways than you might think

First of all, we’re open for business.

The start of term reopening was particularly enjoyable this year because we could bask in the glory of our best ever exam results and enjoy all of the improvements to the campus which happened in the holiday.

Year 7 Settling in Evening: Thursday September 20 2012: 6.00pm

If you are the parent or carer of a year 7 student, you are very welcome to attend this informal, but very valuable event.

You’ll have the chance to meet with staff to find out how your son or daughter is settling in at Marden and to learn more about our policies and routines.

The meeting will take place in our new cafe and refreshments will be available.

Priory/Kings Academy and Marden: A Word from the Head

You might be aware of the proposed formation of a government funded academy by the amalgamation of Priory Primary School and Kings School Tynemouth in September 2013.

Clearly, if this proposal goes ahead, the local educational landscape will change, giving parents a wider choice of secondary education for their children. However, I can assure you that Marden High School will continue to focus relentlessly on achieving the highest possible standards so that we offer a service to the local community which is second to none.
