Standing Together for Holocaust Memorial Day

By J Ranson27th January 2020

Monday 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day.

Students at Marden High have been exploring this year’s theme, which is Stand Together, and have come up with easy strategies to help us all stand together against prejudice and discrimination.

HMD 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz – this is a significant milestone and is made particularly poignant by the dwindling number of survivors who are able to share their testimony. It also marks the 25th anniversary of the Genocide in Bosnia.

Students from the Debate Society will be speaking at the North Tyneside HMD Event on Friday 31st to remember the heroes of the Bosnian Genocide, as well as leading Personal Development lessons this week. Our School of Sanctuary group will be speaking in assemblies on the topic this week too, and our Reflection Time topic is Diversity.

Students attended a talk about the Holocaust during a recent PD lesson.

The Stand Together theme explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours, and speaking out against oppression.

Today there is increasing division in communities across the UK and the world. Now more than ever, we need to stand together with others in our communities in order to stop division and the spread of identity-based hostility in our society.

Well done to all students who have played such an active role. For more information visit the Holocaust Memorial Day website.

Yet more brilliant selflessness from generous Marden students!

Thank You!

By J Ranson18th December 2019

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Food bank appeal.

The BAY Foodbank support people in North Tyneside who may be struggling and unable to afford to eat. Lots of people who work full time jobs may still need to use a food bank and very vulnerable people are supported by the amazing work that food banks do, so every single donation from generous Marden High students was very welcome at this time of year!

Students Join Climate Protest

By J Ranson20th September 2019

In a week of global action around the world, Marden students showed their support for the climate crisis with a protest on the roadside by Tynemouth Long Sands.

The students marched from the school down to the beach during period 3, carrying banners and chanting, and they read out speeches demonstrating their commitment to take action against climate change.

They received support from passing cars and pedestrians as they played their part in the global event.

Headteacher Mr Snape commented: “As a school, we cannot encourage or condone students missing time from school. However, the issue that the students are protesting about is clearly an important one, and they are the next generation to struggle with the consequences of climate change, and so I would like us to be able to support any of them who want to get their views on this matter across, without them being absent from school.

To this end, on Friday 20th September, a group of students and staff demonstrated with banners, speeches and posters on the seafront in order to communicate their views on what needs to be done to work towards a more environmentally sustainable future.
This was a great opportunity for our young people to deliver a reasoned and
responsible message to the wider community.”
