Opera Opportunity!

On Tuesday this week, Year 9 and Year 10 Music and Drama students took part in an all-day workshop with the English Touring Opera company, exploring the genre and narrative of Bellini’s Il Capuleti ei Montecchi (The Capulets and The Montagues).

They explored composition, created an alternative ending and worked together to perform the overture and finale with industry professionals, then on Wednesday evening were lucky enough to visit the Gala Theatre in Durham to watch the opera in full. It was a special and enriching experience enjoyed by all!

Ski Trip 2025

6 members of staff accompanied 46 Year 11 students on the annual Marden high School ski trip to Austria last week. The trip was a huge success and massively enjoyed by all. Blue skies to snowy powder days gave everyone the real experience of the Austrian Alps. We saw some superb skiing and lots of progress throughout the week, along with questionable 10 pin bowling technique and general knowledge quiz responses!
All of the students did themselves and the school proud, they were a pleasure to be away with and we hope they get the chance to ski again soon!
A massive thank you to the staff that went of the trip, the generous offering their time to allows a trip like this to run. Keep your eyes peeled for information regarding a potential 2026 trip for next year’s Year 11.

Programmed For Success!

Recently, Marden students were entered into the Perse School programming competition. Two of our Year 11 students, Aidan and Jonah, have placed in the top 20% of all entries in the country at the advanced level in the first round.

After speaking with the organisers, they were genuinely impressed by this achievement—especially considering it was their first time entering the competition—and they extended their congratulations to both students.

In addition to their success, we had six other strong entries from our Year 10 and Year 11 students, who also performed very well and demonstrated great problem-solving skills and creativity throughout the competition.

This year the competition was divided into two levels, navigator (entry level to moderate) and pathfinder (advanced) and as it was the first year of the competition being run in this way, the problems were much more difficult than previous years. All students except one in Year 10 and 11 sat the pathfinder level of the competition and all did incredibly well considering the difficulty of the problem set.

Aidan and Jonah will be moving on to the second and final round after half term, joining forces with Benedict from Year 10 to compete as a three-man team.
