On Thursday Marden were delighted to host a lecture from the Institute of Physics, coordinated by Mr. Swain. Year 9 and 10 students attended the ‘Defying Gravity’ event, as well as many other schools from the North East, and enjoyed a fascinating talk given by astrophysicist Laura Thomas about Gravity and Space Travel.
Marden High School recently took part in an ambitious project in association with the Children’s Commission’s Takeover Day initiative. Staff and students switched roles, and students had an exclusive insight into how the school is run; joining staff meetings, delivering lessons and taking part in other integral school decisions. After the amazing philanthropy that was Marden’s Children in Need Pyjama Party and Robbie Elliott’s Bike For Bobby appeal that raised so much, Marden have been on the fundraising trail again. This term Mrs. Johnson and Marden’s Year 10 COPE class made friendship bracelets for blind children in Morocco and raised £265.60, which means lots of Braille equipment can be bought.
“Thank you so much for all your support in giving money for the sponsored swim and the sale of the friendship bracelets. Thanks particularly to Miss McHanwell for donating some of the bracelets. Your support as always is much appreciated.” – Helen Johnson and Year 10 Cope.
We have raised £923.23 for the Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer as part of former Newcastle United footballer Robbie Elliott’s Bike for Bobby campaign. Year 11 student Callum, who came up with the idea to get involved with the charity, presented the cheque to Robbie, who came in to give an assembly and thank the school for their fundraising efforts.

This year Marden celebrated its 50th anniversary. On the 2nd of May this year, this short video was made to show a typical school day for the staff and students.
It was first shown at the Photography Exhibition that was part of Marden’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on the 8th of July.
The PE department at Marden has received a generous donation of £500 from the Northumberland Park branch of Sainsbury’s. Here staff from the branch pose with PE teacher Miss Allison and students who will benefit from the grant. The money is to be split between the Boys and Girls departments and spent on new kit for extra-curricular teams, complete with Sainsbury’s sponsor.
