Good Morning Manhattan!

Day One is done, and after a long day of travelling yesterday, we touched down in New York City and caught our first glimpse of the awesome Manhattan skyline at night…

After checking in to our hotel rooms we sauntered into Times Square, just minutes from our Comfort Inn on West 44th, and had a late meal at Planet Hollywood, taking in the sights and sounds and smells of the city that never sleeps as we went…

We have awoken this morning to some strange sights, not least fake snow being pumped into Times Square to create a ski-ramp, which Mr. Prytherch is no doubt dying to have a go on.

Mr. Horn has already scouted out the area and given us a brief weather report as we file down for breakfast, here’s what Manhattan looks like this fair morning: (we’re four hours behind the UK by the way – so it’s about 7:30 here!)

The weather seems mild so far this morning, and as we tuck into our breakfast we are looking forward to visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero before lunch at Pier 17.

New Year 11 students visited Tyne Met College and Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College all morning on Thursday 4th July where they took part in all sorts of taster sessions.

Polyglot Club

Digital Kitchen Event

10 Students from the Polyglot (Many Languages) Club had the opportunity to attend a European language learning project called LanCook. They took part in a series of language learning exercises by following recipes and working in a digital kitchen. After having a test run in English, making scones, the students followed instructions in Italian to make ‘involtini alla contadina’, using kitchen equipment linked up with sensors. The digital kitchen functions in a similar way to the Nintendo Wii, giving instructions and monitoring progress. The best way to monitor progress in this case was in the tasting. Turkey Visit

As part of a ‘Comenius’ project, Marden are looking to get funding for a student and teacher exchange to Turkey in 2014. Mrs Noble visited Turkey over the Christmas holidays to make initial contact with Camlaralti College in Izmir.

Ski Trip 2012 – Gerlitzen, Austria

MHS in NYC 2012

In April 2012, 8 staff and 43 Year 10 and Year 11 students visited New York City as part of a Business and Media trip, visiting NBC Studios, the Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and various shopping outlets…
