Fundraising Goes a Long Way!

By J Ranson23rd June 2017

Massive congratulations are due to Year 9 student Jenny Hurnell who has been fundraising for several weeks now for Macmillan Cancer Support.

This Saturday, the 24th of June, Jenny will walk 25 miles of Hadrian’s Wall from Hexham to Brampton in aid of the charity, of which she has raised a huge £572.64 from a non-uniform day and a ‘Name the teddy bear’ competition.

Mrs Proud poses with Jenny after revealing the ‘Name the teddy bear’ winner.

The teddy bear was named Otto and the lucky winner was Year 9 student Olivia-Mae Uren-Patterson.

Thanks to all who donated, and well done Jenny, we wish her good luck on her walk!

Year 9s Get Wise to WISDOM!

By Mrs D Sloan21st June 2017

Three of our Year 9 students – Hannah Yeoman, Kate Edwardson and Emma Jardine, attended the W.I.S.D.O.M. event and had an inspiring evening to say the least. Although not an in-school event, the impact this has had on their drive to pursue their knowledge of Maths will ultimately impact on their success at GCSE and their future careers.

Hannah Yeoman –

“It was an inspiring experience that allowed me to think about my future. From the experience at WISDOM I now want to continue Maths after school. The talks by the women at the university were amazing ! I realised how many opportunities I could have if  continue Maths after high school. There are so many jobs which I never would have thought involved Maths. The lecture by a lady who helped predict what would happen during the outbreak of foot and mouth disease really made me consider how important women are to Maths and Science. WISDOM is definitely something  that I would want to do again as it was one of the most inspiring and amazing things I have done. It was definitely worth it “

Kate Edwardson-

“The whole experience was engaging and provoked my thoughts and ideas – How could I affect the world for the better by using Maths? We met inspirational women who are a huge part of space discovery, and preventing diseases (that had the risk of killing thousands of lives), which made me think about how many doors Maths can open and how positively these women have impacted our world. This event has also inspired me to take Maths further, and explore what I can do to my full potential.”

Emma Jardine –

“It was different to what I expected in a good way. There was useful information about what life is like as a Maths Student in University and talks from people who have a career in Maths. It made me realise that there are so many different things you can do in the future if you take Maths further than GCSE.”

MaD Day at Newcastle Medical School!

By J Williams16th June 2017

On Thursday 15 June, eleven Year 9 students visited Newcastle University MaD day (Medicine and Dentistry day) to give them an insight into what it was like to study medicine or dentistry at university.

They had a fabulous time at the Medical School, getting hands on experience in a range of activities including maintaining airways, fitting neck braces, performing ultrasound scans of the abdomen, plastering “broken” arms and practising laparoscopy building towers with sugar cubes.

At the Dentistry school they practised coordinating movements while looking through a mirror, examined dentition from various animals and human teeth samples, revealed how good they were at brushing their teeth using disclosing tablets and carved a

false tooth out of wax. A very enjoyable day all round for our potential doctors or dentists of the future.

On Saturday, Young Mayor Oscar Daniel, a Year 8 student, took part in ‘The Big Spring Beach Clean’ event at Tynemouth Longsands. The nationwide event is organised by Surfers Against Sewage, and aims to help clean up our beaches by recycling single-use or ‘throwaway’ plastics that are sadly littering the nations coastline and rivers.

In partnership with leading sustainable brand Ecover, Surfers Against Sewage aims to collect over 50,000 plastic bottles from our beaches to create new bottles for the pioneering Ecover Ocean Plastic Bottle Project.
