A reminder to all students that this Friday is Children in Need. Here is a breakdown of activities taking place during the day, and as usual we are having a non-uniform day for £1. Wristbands will be available on the school gate.
Thanks to everyone who attended our Friday 13th Spooky Quiz night organised by the Parent-Teacher Association. It was a great success and there were some tremendous costumes on show too. Here’s some pictures from the event.

On Monday and Tuesday, Marden students enjoyed a variety of exciting activities. As well as trips to Lightwater Valley, there were quizzes, singing competitions, film screenings, sports activities, and as you can see from these pictures, Marden’s Great British Bake Off and a Year 7 and Year 8 trip to the Procter and Gamble offices!
10 students from year 9 and 10 who are studying French attended Newcastle University yesterday for an opportunity to be a European Apprentice.
Led by Europe Direct and Routes into Languages the students took part in a series of activities which were marked and judged by language ambassadors from the University. They had to answer a letter of complaint and respond to a positive review on various products, translate a series of phrases connected to marketing and advertising and work in a team using a variety of resources. This was all leading to the creation of an animated advert for hairspray and a fast food restaurant where they wrote and recorded the voice over as well as animated the presentation.
Marden High School achieved first and second place! Running second for most of the day they upped their game and beat the other schools. Year 10 as Team Grenoble came first and were able to say “Vous êtes viré” (You’re fired) to the other teams. Year 9 (the only year 9 team) as Team Nice came a very close second.

Our annual summer talent show, Marden’s Got Talent, took place last night, with some fantastic and varied acts on show, all raising money for Clic Sargent, a children’s cancer charity.
It was a great evening of entertainment, with Year 7 Liv Surrey voted the winner by judges for her magic act. Second place went to Olivia Peterson who performed a stunning version of ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ by Oasis, and 3rd place went to the Marden Ukulele Club, who sang and performed Elvis Presley’s ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’.
Hosted by our fantastic comperes, Martha Topping and Alice Crossland, well done to all the students and staff who took part and made it a memorable occasion.
Year 10s are presented with the trophy for NUFC Foundation’s ‘School of the Year’
Since October, a group of Year 10 students have been taking part in an ASDAN Five-A-Side Football programme run by NUFC Foundation, an independent charity supported by Newcastle United Football Club, the Premier League, Sport Relief and backed by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

The Enterprise Academy teaches 11 to 19 year-olds the basic principles of business and self-employment using Newcastle United as a real life case study. The programme helps students understand jobs, professions and career options and delivers programmes that are innovative and fun.
After successfully working with Marden in delivering the course, project coordinator Gavin Ferry and his team invited us to the annual celebration event held at St. James’ Park, attended by 14 schools and over 250 participants.
The Foundation chose Marden High as their School of the Year, and the Year 10s were presented with a trophy, a plaque and photographed with the SkyBet Championship trophy won by Newcastle United last season.
It was a great effort for the students to attend the event on their day off from school, and credit must go to them for their consistent hard work throughout the year that has seen them worthy winners of this prestigious award! Well done Marden High!
On Saturday and Sunday seven Year 9 students training for their Duke of Edinburgh award camped in Broomley Grange near Stocksfield and demonstrated excellent map reading skills and teamwork on two tough days of walking. It was a great weekend and gives them superb preparation for their qualifying expedition at Hadrian’s Wall this weekend. Good luck! Here are some pictures of their adventures.
Marden Year 11 students travelled to Telford on Tuesday after being selected as finalists in the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2017 Challenge! Zoe Elliott, Harriet Taylor and Kieran Scott created a Christmas video for Ryman stationery and were shortlisted in the top 5 in this National competition!
They were invited to The National Enterprise Challenge as special guests and met successful entrepreneurs who shared tips and tricks. Harriet and Zoe met the hosts of the event, Sam and Mark from CBBC, as well as Team GB 2016 Olympic Champion Joe Clarke! #GEW2017 @_tnec
