The English department with Year 7 during the World Book Day awards assembly.
The 20th anniversary of World Book Day took place on Thursday, and Marden were active participants as usual. Staff, Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to dress as a literary character for the day. There was also a lunchtime quiz and Key Stage 3 students took part in literary activities and writing competitions with the English department all day.
In total, £200.30 was raised for BOOK AID. Well done to everyone who took part.
Our Drama and Music departments have been working hard on this year’s showpiece performance, Bugsy Malone. There are two showings coming up, be sure to get your ticket…
As you may have seen from our @mardenPE Twitter page and recent Sports posts, some Year 9 students have recently taken part in a Kick-Off HE Raising Aspirations course with Northumbria University.
This has involved a series of afternoons of boxing training and workshops. Participants Cameron Balloch, Jonny Jordan and Jared Robson have written about their experience:
“We have been learning how to box from the Great Britain Boxing coach and have worked on projects such as Journalism and creating a new idea in sport like a sports bottle or training shoe.
The course is designed to help us learn about higher education and to get us interested in sport for the future. So far we have been to Northumbria University and Sport Central and done a whole day there; also we have had a few afternoons in school doing boxing and projects. When we went to the university we had a talk with ex-GB and Olympic swimmer Chris Cook and he talked to us about sport and how you have to be determined to be successful.
This made us think about our future in sport and why we need to be determined and how much effort and sacrifices we will need to make in sport.”
A group of Year10 students last week participated in the region’s largest medical career day event organised by MCS Raising Aspirations Group.
Caitlin Thompson and Nieve Allot were prize winners in the Diagnostic workshop and Sajan Mann and Kijah-Star Wardsmith in the CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) workshop.
Well done to all involved.
It’s been rewards week here at Marden, with students choosing from a variety of activities to take part in after cashing in their hard earned merits. Here’s some footage of a kick boxing session ran by Burns School of Blackbelts.

There was also an archery session on Thursday morning:
On Monday, Year 9 RE students visited Samye Ling, a Tibetan Monastery in Scotland, to learn more about Buddhism.
Samye Ling is a monastery and international centre of Buddhist training, known for the authenticity of its teachings and tradition. It offers instruction in Buddhist philosophy and meditation within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. It is also a centre for the preservation of Tibetan religion, culture, medicine, art, architecture and handicrafts.
The students toured the grounds, visited the temple and practiced some meditation, had lunch and sat in on traditional chanting by Buddhist monks, a short clip of which can be seen below.

Marden High School have this week been hosting a ‘Prayer Space In Schools’ event.
All KS3 students have been given the opportunity to use the space to slow down, have time for reflection and be creative in thinking about themselves and some of the challenges they and others face.
They have been asking big questions and taking part in a number of individual and group activities in order to explore their spiritual side.
