Good Morning Manhattan!

29th October 2013J Ranson

Day One is done, and after a long day of travelling yesterday, we touched down in New York City and caught our first glimpse of the awesome Manhattan skyline at night…

NYC skyline arrival

After checking in to our hotel rooms we sauntered into Times Square, just minutes from our Comfort Inn on West 44th, and had a late meal at Planet Hollywood, taking in the sights and sounds and smells of the city that never sleeps as we went…

Times Sq

We have awoken this morning to some strange sights, not least fake snow being pumped into Times Square to create a ski-ramp, which Mr. Prytherch is no doubt dying to have a go on.

Mr. Horn has already scouted out the area and given us a brief weather report as we file down for breakfast, here’s what Manhattan looks like this fair morning: (we’re four hours behind the UK by the way – so it’s about 7:30 here!)

The weather seems mild so far this morning, and as we tuck into our breakfast we are looking forward to visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero before lunch at Pier 17.

Year 7 – Marden 4 – 1 John Spence

The Year 7 boys made it two wins in a row with an impressive 4-1 victory at home to local rivals John Spence on Wednesday night. Tom Moore chipped in with two more goals to add to his hat-trick against Monkseaton Middle School a fortnight ago, with Robbie Stephenson and Jacob Sharman also getting on the scoresheet.

Year 9 – Marden 3 – 4 Seaton Burn

Meanwhile, on the big pitch, the U14s came were edged out by Seaton Burn in a league and cup double header, despite a spirited second half comeback after trailing 4-1. Will Kelly got his fourth in two games in the first half, whilst captain Thomas Stoetzel added a classy second and Harvey Laycock scored for the second game on the bounce to pull the home side right back into it, but the bare eleven players available could not get the equaliser they were pushing for.

Well done to both teams.

YEAR 8 BOYS FOOTBALL

2nd October 2013J Ranson

Marden High – 6 : 1 – Marden Bridge

After a winless run during their time in Year 7, Mr. Prytherch’s Year 8 boys grabbed their maiden victory at the first time of asking this term, with a resounding 6-1 thrashing of Marden Bridge at home on Wednesday night.

A tense opening saw Aaron Gordon’s looped effort evade the away goalkeeper to open the scoring and another was added before half time when Ben McDermott drove home from the edge of the box after good build up play between Aaron Gordon and Dan McGee.  McGee then added a third himself, scampering through from the right to dink a left footed effort into the far corner.

The away side came out fighting in the second half and earned a penalty when Sol Elliott was unlucky to handle in his area attempting to deal with an awkward bouncing ball. The resulting spot kick was dispatched for 3-1, but Marden’s U13s held their composure and regained their three goal advantage when defender Laurie Robson’s hopeful ball upfield was misjudged by the keeper and bounced over his head for a fourth.

A smart fifth soon followed, with excellent defensive work from Lewis Follin and Oli Symons releasing the lively McGee to square for Aaron Gordon to expertly tap home his second of the game.  The scoring was complete when man of the match Symons, playing in a defensive midfield role, towered above the defence to head home a superb outswinging Ben McDermott corner.

All in all it was a confident and assured display, avenging a 5-2 defeat by the same team last year.  Well done to everyone involved!

TEAM: Grant Craig, Sol Elliott, Jack Snell, Adam Hay (c), Laurie Robson, Oli Symons, Lucas Sutherland, Leodhais McPherson (replaced by Lewis Follin), Aaron Gordon, Dan McGee, Ben McDermott
