Science Live!

Yesterday, a group of Year 10 students visited Leeds Town Hall for a Science Live event. There they had the chance to see and hear five of Britain’s top scientists, all working at the cutting edge of their specialisms.

The aim of the trip was to help improve GCSE Science results with top tips on examination success from an experienced science examiner and show students that Science really does offer solutions for many of the world’s great problems.

In a fast-moving, exciting, thought-provoking event, the students had the chance to raise issues with the scientists. with the primary objective to generate greater enthusiasm for science amongst GCSE pupils.

Well done for the exceptional behaviour of all students who went on the trip!

Year 7 Media Project

This year, a class of Year 7 students have been working on a cross-curricular project between the Technology and Media Studies departments; this term their task was to create a digital media marketing campaign promoting careers in STEM!

Over twelve lessons, two groups of four went head-to-head as rival teams and designed team logos, posters and campaign videos, as well as learning about careers in STEM and the importance of brand identity and media marketing.

This gave Year 7 the opportunity to take part in some practical Media Studies lessons and expand their knowledge on STEM careers, and in particular they chose to focus on a campaign to try and encourage more women to get into STEM careers. At the end of the project they presented confidently to a staff panel.

Well done to everyone who worked so hard!

Helping Hand

Handball is becoming one of the fastest growing sports, and our region is making great steps towards making it a key sport in schools and colleges, with more clubs and opportunities to play throughout the North East.

As part of our PE department’s relationship with Tyne Met College, some Marden students were featured on BBC Look North last night in their handball segment. The video starts at around 19:48. Follow this link to watch it on BBC iPlayer.

Community Clothing Scheme

The PTA are collecting items of school uniform that are no longer needed to pass on to the Community School Clothing Scheme.
This is an organisation based at the Cobalt which provides uniform, along with other items to families struggling to source them including coats, bags, shoes etc.
All have to be in good condition and any donations can be dropped off at school reception.

Upcoming Charity Event

Marden High School would like to formally invite everyone in our school community to a forthcoming charity event organised by the Cullercoats Primary School PTA. The charity evening will take place at Cullercoats Crescent Club on Saturday 16 March at 7.00pm.

It is in aid of the Olly Bilcliffe Trust and there will be music from a live band and a disco. Tickets are £5 which includes a pie and pea supper.

PTA Appeal!

Do you have any unwanted Christmas gifts? Our Parent-Teacher Association is making an appeal for any suitable donations that someone else could make use of, and would make great prizes for future raffles or tombolas. These could be unwanted chocolates, drinks, toys or other unused gifts.

Please bring any donations to the school’s reception or LRC and students will be rewarded with 10 house points. Thank you!

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter would like to say a huge thank you to all students who contributed to our appeal before Christmas. The shelter popped in yesterday, with Roscoe the dog, to collect the food, toys and bedding that Marden students had donated last term and they were blown away by the response.

The return journey to the shelter was a tight squeeze for Roscoe, as the car was filled with our donations, but it was indicative of the generosity of our students, many of whom were pictured with Roscoe before the donations were handed over.

Well done to everyone who took part and donated to the appeal!
