Food Bank Appeal

By J Ranson21st December 2018

Thank you to all students and staff who contributed to our food bank appeal this Christmas, and also those who donated food and other items to Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter.

Four students delivered boxes and boxes of food tins and packages to one of The Bay Foodbank‘s drop-off locations this morning. A marvellous donation by our generous school community at this time of year.

BANANA STEM vs. DYNAMITE

By J Ranson6th December 2018

WEEK 1

A new group of Year 7s convened in the Media Studio to begin the STEM/Media cross curricular project. They began by individually learning about brand identity and the power of media marketing, designing moodboards about different companies and their successful use of branding.

Madison researched the slick design of Samsung products.

They spent the next lesson reading the brief and researching STEM, before adding this to their document.

Brooke’s research into STEM careers.

The eight students were then split into two groups of four and started discussing their team ambitions, what they wanted to produce during the project, but also how they would market themselves. Their first task was to come up with a team name and logo as they started forming their team’s brand identity…

WEEK 2

The two teams learned about brand identity and the importance of a strong logo. They chose team names and designed logos. Banana Stem was chosen as a symbol of wisdom, and a sleek yellow design followed. Meanwhile, Dynamite was the other team name, complete with a dynamic logo and snappy tagline; “We’ll blow you away.”

Both teams then showed off their photography skills and created posters to help promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, utilising their new team logos.

WEEK 3

As both teams revealed and refined their poster designs, the two teams learned about storyboarding and script planning. Then, in the space of just two lessons, they filmed promotional videos about STEM, both groups deciding on a BBC-style news report format.

They then had just one lesson to edit their videos before planning their presentations to a staff panel…

WEEK 4

With just one lesson of planning, both Banana Stem and Dynamite presented to a staff panel and outlined all they had done over the previous weeks.

Alice and Madison of ‘Dynamite’ reveal their poster designs.

They described what they had learned about marketing, brand identity, synergy and the effect of media campaigns.

They also discussed the justifications for their team names, their logos and presented their poster designs and video campaigns.

Well done to all Year 7s who produced some great work to a tight deadline and learnt a lot about STEM careers and different Media platforms.

BBC Young Reporter LIVE – 4:03pm

By J Ranson30th November 2018

It is Takeover Week this week at Marden High, and our Year 8s have taken over the Media Studio and found out what is like in the high pressure world of journalism.

There have been some fantastic reports today during our first practice @BBCYoungReport day of the year. Young journalists of the future handled complex topics maturely and confidently, & some of them even hit the deadline too! A great experience of the world of journalism and media!

Stories covered included environmental issues, the controversy surrounding palm oil, Article 13 and how it effects YouTube creators, and a maturely handled story about the controversy that still surrounds breast feeding in public.

Our Year 8s have had a brilliant day, and reports will appear online very soon!

Year 7 Get Creative in Cross-Curricular Project

By J Ranson22nd November 2018

This term, a small group of Year 7 students have been working on a cross-curricular project between the Technology and Media Studies departments; their task was to create a digital media marketing campaign promoting careers in STEM!

One team’s eye-catching poster designs.

This could promote STEM in school or STEM careers and also give Year 7 the opportunity to take part in some practical Media Studies lessons and learn about the world of media marketing.

In an ‘Apprentice’-style task over twelve lessons, they went head-to-head as rival teams and designed team logos, posters and campaign videos, as well as learning about careers in STEM and the importance of brand identity.

The teams present their work at the end of the project.

Another intrepid group will now take on the task over the coming weeks. For a more in-depth look at what they have been getting up to, CLICK HERE to visit the dedicated project page on our website.

Well done to everyone who worked so hard!
