BIMA Digital Day – Coming Soon!

12th October 2021J Ranson
BIMA Digital Day gives 11-16 year olds an insight into a world of digital careers. Our Year 10 students will soon be given the opportunity to compete in a sponsored, nationwide digital challenge for a chance to win £500 cash for our school and some fantastic prizes for themselves.

It’s a day that brings digital to life. 95% of BIMA members told us a lack of skills was holding back their growth. The Centre for Economics and Business Research agreed, saying the shortage of tech and digital talent is costing the UK £21.8bn.

Pandemic aside, digital has been growing at twice the rate of the broader economy. But unless we fix the skills shortage, that can’t continue.

Hedgehog Labs
Ranked #1 Global Mobile App Developer working with customers in UK & USA, delivering mobile (iOS & Android), web & digital products to brands.

The Big Draw

8th October 2021J Ranson
This week, Marden High have been participating in The Big Draw Festival 2021.
The Big Draw is a registered charity, founded in 2000 to raise the profile of drawing as a tool for wellbeing, thought, creativity and engagement.
Each year, across the world, events are held, encouraging people of all ages and  backgrounds to have fun drawing, and this year we have got involved! The theme is #makethechange which explores the world we live in. For more details please CLICK THIS LINK.
The activities that took place this week included:
  • Create your own drawing (open to all staff and students – each entry handed in on Google Classroom receives 50 house points).
  • Tutor Group Challenge (Years 7-9 creating their own drawing based on the theme #makethechange during Personal Development on Tuesday. Staff and students will be given a chance to vote for their favourite from each year group and the winners’ artwork will be displayed in school with each tutee receiving 50 merits).
  • Classroom Challenge (ALL students were given at least ONE opportunity throughout the week to use drawing as a tool for exploration in lessons, with this week’s Work of the Week having a drawing focus.

Well done to everyone who contributed and thank you for taking part!

Police Cadet Volunteer Scheme

8th October 2021J Ranson

Applications are now open for Northumbria Police Cadets three-year scheme.

The Northumbria Police cadet scheme is a three-year programme open to students in Year 10, where young people work alongside serving police officers, see behind the scenes of stations and get involved with their local community.

They meet weekly and will be trained in a new subject, from learning the basics of the law to practical first aid skills.

Cadets get involved with high profile local events too – and could find themselves lending a hand along the route of the Great North Run, joining thousands of others in marching at a Pride event or doing a meet and greet at Sunderland Air Show.

Joining the cadets is a chance for young people to find out their strengths, make a whole new set of friends and find a sense of independence.

They can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh paid for by the police.

Applications are open now until 31 October. Find out more and apply now at:
https://careers.northumbria.police.uk/citizens-in-policing/police-cadet-volunteers/

For a look at what the Police Cadets get up to, there’s a video here

COVID Home Testing

5th October 2021J Ranson

Many thanks for your continued support with home testing. To support you with this, all eligible students will be given a new box of home testing kits during Registration this week. Students who have tested positive within the last 90 days should not take one.

Please be aware that we have been provided with Flowflex tests this time. These tests should be taken with a nasal swab only – no throat swabbing. If this is a problem for your child, please let me know and I will provide them with a pack of the Innova tests.

The method of processing the tests is different to what we have been used to, so please follow the instructions included in the pack and in particular be aware of the advice regarding eating and drinking on page 7.
Please remember that results should be reported to both school and the NHS, links available on the website, and we would appreciate your child  continuing to test twice a week.
If you have any queries, please contact Mrs Thompson by email:
[email protected] or telephone 0191 296 2771.
