WW1 Project – First Steps Taken

22nd October 2014J Ranson

Our intrepid Year 7 History detectives have taken their first steps as they embark on their ambitious World War One Memorial Project – they have visited St. George’s Church to see the restored war memorial and learn more about the fallen soldiers of Cullercoats.

War memorial

The students have ‘adopted a soldier’ – each taking the name of a Cullercoats soldier killed in World War One, and on Tuesday they took a walk round Cullercoats village, visiting the houses where the soldiers lived, and in some cases, died.

The students delivered letters and flyers advertising our upcoming Community Memory Day on the 7th of November.

17th October 2014J Ranson

Year 8 students took part in a Rugby Festival at Bullocksteads on Thursday evening, winning every game without conceding a single try. It was a great afternoon of sport from the lads who have really benefitted from their rugby training with Mr. Whitehouse and Mr. Richards during Lesson 6 every Wednesday evening.

Year 7 Boys Football

14th October 2014J Ranson

Marden 0 – 5 St. Thomas More

Yr7 Boys Football

The Year 7 boys kicked off their football campaign with a difficult match against a strong St. Thomas More side in windy conditions on Monday night, going down 0-5.

However, there was a spirited attitude throughout, and some positive moments, with two lung bursting runs from Jared Robson either side of half time resulting in right wing crosses that needed to be cleared from under the crossbar.

Josh Harrison also went close for the home side after captain Cameron Balloch sent him through, but his attempted lob was pushed away by the goalkeeper before being cleared off the line.

All in all, it was a tough lesson for the Under 12s, playing 9-a-side on a large pitch, and they face an equally hard battle against John Spence this Friday, but commitment to the cause and spirit cannot be faulted.

U16 Netball Success

13th October 2014J Ranson

Our U16 netball squad became joint winners with Whitley Bay High of the North Tyneside Championships on Wednesday. The final overall result had to be determined by goals scored. The players drew one match and won all the others on the night and the effort and commitment they showed as a team was highly commendable. Congratulations to all involved.

Yr11 Boys make it two from two

13th October 2014J Ranson

The Year 11 Boys Football team made it two wins out of two with a 6-2 away victory against Churchill, following on from their impressive season opener against Seaton Burn. Alex Hardie particularly impressed with a solid performance in a holding midfield role.

It has been a much more difficult start for the Year 9 and 10 boys teams, with Year 10 following up their spirited defeat to George Stephenson with a 0-6 home reverse against local rivals John Spence.

Meanwhile, Mr. Prytherch’s Year 9s followed a tough 0-8 season opener away to Whitley High with a 0-9 defeat at home to St. Thomas More.

The Year 7 and Year 8 boys teams kick off their campaigns this week.

Yr8 WW1 Artwork

13th October 2014J Ranson

On Friday 10th October, 24 talented Yr8 artists took part in a Super Learning Day to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War. The aim was to honour the victims of this cruel war: by bringing to the attention of the community the suffering of many local families through the deaths of their loved ones.

WW1 two images

Working collaboratively in groups of two and three, pupils created A1 sized paintings to reflect the involvement of local Cullercoats men who lost their lives in battle. We looked at the paintings of war artist Paul Nash as a starting point: in particular the lighting, colour and some details Nash used in his work to create land and seascapes of our own.

Pupils also looked at the creation and display of the installation by ceramic artist Paul Cummins: entitled ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ which is currently on display at The Tower of London. We discussed the significance of the poppy as a symbol of hope in the years following the war. Influenced by this moving exhibition which runs until armistice day, pupils endeavoured to include the iconic image of the poppy as part of their painting.

Our project is running parallel to the official Tynemouth World War 1 Commemoration Project, so pupils were able to access locally researched information: particularly details of the men whose names are mentioned on the War Memorial in the church grounds. During the morning Mr Morris, Father Adrian: Rector of St George’s Cullercoats, and several members of the Heritage Memorial committee visited the classroom to witness the work as it was being produced.

Even though we were tackling a sombre subject, there was a good working atmosphere in the room throughout the day; everyone agreeing we had thoroughly enjoyed finding out more and commemorating the role of the local lads. It is intended to display some of the work in school and some at St George’s Church over the armistice day period to respectfully remember and honour the dead of our local community.

Football season underway

30th September 2014J Ranson

YEAR 9: Whitley Bay 8-0 Marden

YEAR 10: George Stephenson 3-0 Marden

A tough opening encounter for the Year 9 boys, who last week went down 8-0 away to Whitley Bay High School.

Meanwhile, the Year 10s put in a spirited performance away to George Stephenson but were ultimately defeated 3-0, unfortunately hitting the post twice and failing to convert a second half penalty kick.

Both teams have a quick opportunity to make amends, with Year 10 at home to John Spence this Wednesday, and the Year 9s have back-to-back home games against Norham and St. Thomas More next week.
